I love guerilla marketing. It’s so simple, effective, outrageous and exciting. Guerilla marketing is all about using unique low cost promotion tactics to create maximum revenue for yourself. In this article, I outline 5 different guerilla tactics for making more music sales:-

1) Make fans a musical birthday card! - Nowadays, it’s so easy to keep on track of people’s birthdays and this can even be done automatically using e-calendars and programs that act as reminders. When you ask your fan to sign up at your site, make sure you take their birthday. That way, when it comes next, you can send them an e-card. It costs nothing and it means everything. Perhaps even offer them a coupon of their next purchase.

You don’t have to do it to all your fans if you don’t want to. Maybe just to your best 50 fans who’ve purchased multiple times from your site. You will obviously have to have your database setup to include a place for your fans to give you their birth dates, but after that, at the beginning of every month simply sort out who has a birthday coming up and mail them off. Be sure to do this at least a week before the beginning of each month.

2) Perform at your local record store - Work with a music store near you that carries your kind of music. Ask them about performing inside the store and using that to drive lots of sales for you and for the store. How can they say no to that?

Perhaps even offer your CD as the main special sale during the period of performance. Promote it well. Sign autographs. Add people to your mailing list. Be unique. Stand out

3) Use a business card - carry around your music/business card. On it, have your website, details about a free gift at your site if they sign up and instead of putting on a quote, put a favorite lyric from your own music. You’ll find that the person

remembers the line and any time they think of something related in conversations with others, they think of you and start promoting. Works magnificently.

4) Bowl for Leads - Yes, you already get people signing up on your mailing list on your website and at your live gigs, but consider an easier approach. Get a big bowl and get people to put in their business cards or have blank cards they can write on and put into the bowl. Consider promoting it so that they win your latest CD or merchandise after a draw is made from those in the bowl at the end of the night.

5) Create a links page - Put a links page at your website listing other music related websites that may be useful. Put a link to your own newsletter page intertwined with these. Put your links page in your newsletter.

So there you have it. Five guerilla music promotion tactics.
