I’ve never done much networking in the past. I’ve let my writing, success stories and workshops spread on the internet and by referrals. As a result, I now write weekly to over 12,000 musicians in my newsletter.

But I’m starting to get into networking both online and offline over the last six months. I’ve gotten to speak to people who either already know of me or have gotten to know me through me approaching them. These all include people like Derek SiversBob BakerDave HooperAndrew Dubber and more.

I’ve also found people for my own music. I’ve gotten to know a few more booking agents that I knew before, record label owners who get to know my work and therefore request consulting, music reporters and editors who want my opinions, and others who want to join the Musicians Mastermind but just want to get me know a bit more beforehand. I’ve done most of my networking on the internet and a small bit offline at conferences and conventions.

As a musician, what are the key connections you need to make in order to move forward with your projects? Who are the people you need to connect with and would like to get introduced to? How would you start a conversation with them and what could you offer them in return for their help?

Start brainstorming your answers and spend some time thinking about location, personalities, etc. Then consider doing some networking. Set a goal to meet at least three new people each week. That’s potentially 156 people each year. Could you imagine what that would do to your connections and your bottom line with the moves you make?

The key is not just to meet 156 people - but to select the ones that will create a win-win situation for both of you and develop them into better relationships. How will you keep your relationships so you know where to go when you want to find someone? How will you stay in touch with them regularly?

These are all important things to think about. From what I’ve experienced with networking, I’d like to recommend you try it out too. If you want to use the internet for your music business networking, try LinkedIn.
